Camanche duo advances to state tennis semifinals

IOWA CITY — After having to shake off some jitters at the Class 1A girls tennis tournament, the Camanche doubles duet of Lindsey Grams and Kylie Vogel won both matches Thursday over teams from Dubuque Wahlert and Creston.

In the first round, Vogel and Grams defeated Audrey Hinz and Katie Hendricks of Dubuque Wahlert 6-0, 6-1.

"They played aggressively throughout," Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said. "Kylie had some great serves in there that both girls worked off of nicely."

While the first match didn't have much stress on the Indians' duo, their match against Creston/Orient-Macksburg's Audrey Fyock and Jenna Taylor (6-3, 6-0) seemed to give Grams and Vogel some jitters.

"Their shots were a little bit longer, and Creston's kids were very scrappy," Montgomery said. "Today was their first time playing in a week, and it's at the state tournament, so it took them awhile to get comfortable.

"It's hard to have a full week off and have to come back and play at such a high level," Montgomery said.

Despite having some early issues against C/O-M, Montgomery was proud of their resiliency and attitude.

"They never hung their heads," she said. "They knew what they needed to do in order to move on, and they did. They have set high goals for themselves, which I'm glad, because I have, too."

Camanche's semifinal match was scheduled for this morning against Red Oak's Erica Sherman and Grace Blomstedt. Mongtomery kept an eye on those two as they were competing two courts down from Vogel and Grams.

"They're aggressive at the net, so I think if Kylie and Lindsey attack, they should be fine," Montgomery said.
