Camanche man guilty of lesser kidnapping, abuse charges

CLINTON — A Camanche man charged with first-degree kidnapping, attempted murder and second-degree sexual abuse has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Arthur Walker, 52, 4102 Ninth St., Camanche, pleaded guilty Friday to third-degree kidnapping, third-degree sexual abuse and willful injuring causing serious injury with a dangerous weapon. They are all class C felonies and each carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. The sexual abuse charge includes a special sentence of lifetime parole. Two of the counts will run consecutively and one will run concurrently.

The original charges could have carried a life sentence for the count of kidnapping and as much as 25 years each for the other two counts.

According to court documents, the hostage situation for which Walker was charged began hours before police were called by a witness at 3:52 p.m. July 7. The victim told police that her husband had been drinking at a bar in Camanche earlier that day and was cut off from having more alcohol, according to the affidavit. He then went home and began punching her.

Walker grabbed a knife and held it to his wife’s neck for two hours while he sexually abused her, according to her statements in court documents. The affidavit continues that she was able to escape to her neighbor’s house shortly before 4 p.m., only to have her husband physically remove her while armed with the knife and drag her back into their home. Walker released the victim at 4:05 p.m. and she was taken to Mercy Medical Center North for treatment of lacerations on her throat, head and fingers.

A long-standoff ensued and police say Walker indicated he had turned the gas on in his house, threatening to strike a match if officers approached. At 6:45 p.m. he left the house and threatened to stab himself with a knife. An initial report states a Taser was then deployed and Walker was taken into custody.

Walker is being held in the Clinton County jail without bail. His sentencing is set for 9 a.m. May 2.
