Street lights to be added

CAMANCHE — The city of Camanche plans to add four more street lights on Washington Boulevard.

People driving from 17th Avenue to Imperial Lanes,1823 S Washington Blvd., in Camanche, can see four MidAmerican Energy poles with orange marks on them. The city will ask Mid American to attach street lights to these poles.

Camanche Public Works Director Dave Rickertsen told the Camanche City Council on Tuesday that they might not get all four lights put up. He said MidAmerican decides what poles they are able to put lights on.

The city can only request the lights are added. This service is at no cost to the city.

The discussion began at the previous council meeting when Councilman Gary Kampe mentioned how dark the area past 17th Avenue was at night. He felt it was a safety hazard.

City Administrator Tom Roth and Rickertsen went out to the area to see where lights could be added and found these four poles.

Councilman Trevor Willis asked about lighting farther south. The council felt it was best to wait and see if any other problems arise. Rickertsen said they can always add more later.

“The logic we had, kind of all along, was to get to the bowling alley because that’s where the sidewalk was going to stop,” Roth said.

Mayor Ken Fahlbeck felt now was a good time to ask MidAmerican to put up these lights.

He said the city also requested they fix the lights that have been staying on all day. Rickertsen is less concerned because the city pays a flat fee.
