Bellevue edges Camanche by 7 strokes

CLINTON — Riley Till shot a dual-best, nine-hole 37 at The Oaks Golf Course on Monday as the Bellevue Comets defeated Camanche by seven strokes, 188-195.

Camanche’s best golfer, Chod Gilbert, shot a 46, and was the runner-up, thanks to a second cardback (which basically means tiebreaker) over Bellevue’s Joey Pitts. The tiebreaker was the better score on hole No. 9. Pitts had five strokes; Gilbert had four.

“This was our fourth time outside this year, and I thought we played fairly well,” Camanche coach Chris Powers said. “It’s just good to get these guys out right now.”

The Indians had a meet last week at Canyon Creek against Northeast, and Powers said they got to step out onto The Oaks twice last week when temperatures became seasonal.

The next two lowest scores for Camanche came from Devin Booth and Mitch McElroy, each of whom shot a 49 on the cloudy afternoon.

“They’re senior leaders and all that,” Powers said. “They played pretty solid last Monday at Canyon Creek; they help me out in practices as far as what to do, so they’re big for this team.”

Hampton Grim and Mikey Savochka each came in next for Camanche with a 51, followed by a 53-shot performance from Jacob Peasley.

Brody Lodge, Brad Bianchi and Colin Short each finished with scores in the mid-to-upper 50s.

Powers isn’t too worried about expectations from a performance standpoint, he just expects the following: “Based on anything I’ve ever coached, I’ve preached this to my players: Have fun, play hard, give it your all.”

Meanwhile, the Comets had a 50-stroke performance from Jesse Connolly and a 51 from Austin Fahey, while Alex Ernst and Mason Lyons shot 58s. Keenan Ploessl also turned in a 59-shot performance.

The Indians, however, get to return to Valley Oaks for practice later today and for their next meet on Friday against Cal-Wheatland.

“The weather is supposed to be nice, so hopefully that improves our scores as well,” Powers said.
