String of Camanche burglaries reported

CAMANCHE — A string of unsolved burglaries in Camanche has residents and business owners worried about the safety of their community.

Four burglaries were reported in November in the city of Camanche, and at this point the Camanche Police Department has no leads in the case.

“We have no suspects in custody,” Assistant Police Chief Bill Lodge said. (But) we have some surveillance techniques that we are working on.”

Although, according to Lodge, the break-ins have ceased since the last on Nov. 18, the damage to four Camanche businesses is already a concern for residents in the community.

The Spring Garden Restaurant and Junge’s Barber Shop were both hit early in the month on Nov. 3 and Jersey’s Tap and Luigi’s Woodfire Pizzeria were the last to be affected by the break-ins.

In all four burglaries the assailants targeted the cash registers, taking the cash inside, and in one case, the entire register from the business.

“They took the cash register but there was nothing in it,” Luigi’s Woodfire Pizzeria owner Lonny Melchiori said.

Without a suspect in custody and the possibility of a second break-in on his mind, Melchiori took it upon himself to secure his business by installing a security system and new locks on the doors.

Now he says he is not concerned with a repeat event.

“It crosses my mind, but I’ve secured the place so I feel comfortable that it won’t happen again,” Melchiori said.

Other victims were not available or chose not to comment on the crimes.
