Baseball roundup: River Kings split with North

CLINTON — Dustin Caldwell capped a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with a game-ending double that gave Clinton a 3-2 win over Davenport North in the opening game of a baseball doubleheader Thursday, but the Wildcats came back to win Game 2 5-2 and earn the split in Mississippi Athletic Conference baseball.

Caldwell, who was at the plate in the bottom of the first inning when the game was suspended by rain on June 19, capped a three-run seventh for the River Kings, who were shut out for the first six innings by Henry Runge.

With the Kings (10-15-1) trailing 2-0, Evan Jackson doubled to open the seventh. He scored on Johnny Sullivan’s single. Sullivan moved up on Colin Nelson’s groundout and scored on a double by Austin Driscoll to tie the game. Driscoll was thrown out trying for third, but Runge hit Austin Peters with a pitch and was replaced on the mound by Nate Marks.

Caldwell greeted Marcks with a double to right field, and Peters raced home with the winning run.

Jake Faur picked up the victory on the mound for Clinton, throwing a complete-game five-hitter with three walks and nine strikeouts.

The River Kings continued their offensive outburst in the first inning of Game 2, building a 2-0 lead.

Caldwell led off with a single, Murray Henricks walked with two outs and a single by Jordan Chapman scored Caldwell. The second run scored on Jackson’s sacrifice fly.

But that was all the offense the Kings could muster, and the Wildcats slowly battled back.

North pulled within 2-1 on an RBI single by Marks in the fourth, and they added three more runs in the fifth.

A fielder’s choice by Robert Wolf tied the score, and courtesy runner Quilin Johnson scored the go-ahead run on a double by Defauw.

 

Camanche wins

CAMANCHE — Hunter Alm drove in three runs, and Camanche used a fast start to defeat West Branch 8-1 on Thursday in River Valley Conference baseball.

The Indians (12-18) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and increased their lead to 6-0 with three more in the third.

“I really like the way we are playing,” Camanche coach Darryl Cochran said. “We are getting good pitching, timely hitting and very good defense, and that’s a great combination. Tanner (Atkinson) threw a great game, scattering five hits.”

 

Regina tops Rebels

IOWA CITY — Iowa City Regina used a three-run third inning to defeat Northeast 4-1 on Thursday in the River Valley Conference.

Northeast starter Tevin Stoecker allowed just four hits, and all four runs off him were unearned.

Ketzalli Dondiego drove in the Rebels’ lone run in the sixth. The Rebels fell to 18-7, 11-5 in the conference.

“It was just one of those nights where we had a great approach at the the plate and just hit everything at them,” Northeast coach Tyler Howe said. “They made the plays and we didn’t, but I am proud of our guys’ efforts.”
