DUBUQUE — The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois is pleased to announce Kaylee Hilgenberg of Camanche as a Doneta Schaeffer Memorial scholarship recipient. This is a $1,000 scholarship.
Doneta Schaeffer was a Girl Scout volunteer and council staff member who believed that there was always something new to learn, different things to see, and more fun to experience. Those who knew her mourned her unexpected death in 1991, but also rejoiced in the memories and examples of a life full of learning and giving that she left. The annual Doneta Schaeffer Memorial Scholarship was established to help girls and adults remember and renew this legacy at least once a year. Designed to help the recipients further their education, the $1,000 scholarship is given to a Girl Scout who exemplifies the ideals that Doneta held dear.
Kaylee developed and presented self-esteem workshops for area Girl Scout troops and fourth- and fifth-grade girls. At her workshops, Kaylee addressed the issue of low self-esteem in young women and girls that could lead to depression, anxiety and suicide. She continues to assemble and donate personal item care kits to the YWCA. Kaylee plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College.
