Girls basketball roundup: Camanche tumbles

CAMANCHE — West Branch pulled away over the final seven minutes Friday, sending Camanche to its third consecutive loss, 50-41 in a River Valley Conference girls basketball game.

The Bears scored the first five points and led 20-12 midway through the second quarter. But, Kylie Vogel (17 points) caught fire from the outside and led a Camanche comeback. She buried three 3-point baskets in the final four minutes of the half to pull the Indians even at 23 before the Bears went up 25-23 at the half.

West Branch re-established the lead in the third quarter and clinched the win from the free-throw line. Haley Mullinnex made 7 of 9 free throws in the second half and finished with 13 points for the Bears. Ashley Finnigan also scored 13 for West Branch.

Erie hangs on

ERIE, Ill. — Erie held off a hard charge by Sterling Newman in the fourth quarter and beat the Comets 40-34 on Friday in Three Rivers Conference action.

Playing their third game in three nights, the Cardinals (18-8, 8-4 conference) led 10-8 after one quarter, 20-14 at the half and 34-17 after three quarters. Newman made things interesting in the fourth, though, outscoring Erie 17-6.

Courtney Cobert made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead Erie. Her sister Rachel had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Mary Alice Oswalt of Newman led all players with 16 points.

Rubel, Reeg lead Comets

BELLEVUE — Carly Rubel had a big first half, and she led Bellevue to a 45-25 victory against visiting Tipton on Friday in River Valley Conference girls basketball.

Rubel scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half, which ended with the Comets leading 28-11. Ali Reeg added 10 of her 15 in the opening 16 minutes.

Bellevue scored the first nine points, holding the Tigers scoreless for more than four minutes. The Comets closed the first quarter with a 6-0 run in the final minute, building a double-digit lead that they never lost.
