A spooky trip to Rock Creek

CAMANCHE — To join in with the holiday celebration, the Clinton County Conservation board is hosting a Halloween night at the Rock Creek Marina and Campground on Saturday.

Beginning at 2 p.m., families can enjoy a number of different activities including an apple pressing workshop, where children can enjoy homemade apple juice and cider, and a face painting station with Kristal Shaff of the Painted Dragon.

“(They) can either do up a special thing for the kids or add to their Halloween costumes; whichever they choose,” CCCB naturalist Jessica Steines said.

The evening activities will kick-off with a campsite trick-or-treat for the campground children beginning at 5 p.m.

Although being in the wilderness can often be eerie, campers are encouraged to decorate their sites with “family-friendly” Halloween displays, appropriate for all ages, for the trick-or-treat.

But, the night has plenty more to offer guests than trick-or-treating through the campground.

Following the candy gathering, the CCCB will offer short, owl calling rides aboard the Blue Heron pontoon boat in search of Barred Owls along the Mississippi River.

The cruise also will give riders a chance to see the campground decorations from the water, as well as the decorations aboard the Blue Heron.

“It’s kind of neat, because it’s a campground so people, who are there, are celebrating,” Steines said. “You’re immersed in wilderness so it’s kind of creepy already, and you’re getting people out of their element. Plus, when you hear those owls calling, it’s a little creepy, too.”

Once riders aboard the Blue Heron return to the campground, a lighted hayrack ride will be waiting for them to tour the grounds and the variety of decorated campsites.

Those campsites will then have their decorations judged and the site with the most Halloween spirit will be awarded with prizes courtesy of the CCCB.
