Camanche takes 4th fourth

IOWA CITY — Despite losing a pair of seniors who wrote many successful chapters in Camanche girls’ tennis history, Erin Montgomery is excited for the future.

Camanche finished fourth in the Class 1A Team Tennis Championships as the Indians fell in the semifinals 5-1 to Red Oak, then lost in the third place dual to Cedar Rapids Xavier 5-3.

Kylie Vogel, one of the Camanche seniors, was the lone Indian to win in the dual against Red Oak as she defeated Kate Walker 6-1, 6-1.

“Kylie was quick with her game,” Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said. “We knew that Red Oak was a dominant team, and they were tough on us right away.”

Montgomery also commented on Alexa DeVries’s match against Sarah Behrens, which went 6-4, 7-5 in Red Oak’s favor.

“Many of Alexa’s points were long, and it was a close match,” Montgomery said. “All of the girls played like they had nothing to lose.”

Lindsey Grams lost to Grace Blomstedt 6-2, 6-1; Maddie Parker lost to Paige Vannausdle 6-1, 6-3; Brett Hilgendorf fell to 6-1, 6-0 to Erica Sherman, and Edens lost 6-1, 6-3.

Then, in the dual against Xavier, two of Camanche’s three wins came from Vogel — one in singles play, and later in doubles play with Grams as her partner. In Vogel’s singles win, she defeated Kylie DeWees 6-0, 6-1, then won with Grams against DeWees/Allison Jasper 6-3, 6-2.

“It was nice for them to play one more full match together,” Montgomery said. “Those two got off quick, and ended their seasons with a win.”

Hilgendorf had a little bit of trouble in the middle portion of her match against Jeanne Bouchard as she lost 6-2 in the middle set, but won the first and last sets 7-5 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

“Brett kept us in the dual with her win,” Montgomery said.

With the season over, Montgomery looks to the summer season with many players returning.
