Camanche takes 4th fourth

“We have a bright future,” she said. “A lot of the girls grew this week at state. They got better by just watching good tennis, and because of that, we played at a much higher level.”

A fourth place finish is something that the Indians are satisfied with, but not a place where they’re wanting to finish.

“We want a championship program,” Montgomery said. “We cannot settle for fourth place; I don’t think anybody is willing to settle. Sure, we’re happy being one of the four best programs in the state, but we’re aiming for better.”

Camanche will begin its five-week summer program trying to develop younger Indians to keep the tradition alive.

“The cool thing for me is that those who have graduated and are out of the program come back to help,” Montgomery said. “Everyone cares about this program.”

Waterloo Columbus won the state title 5-4 over Red Oak.
