Camanche students get exercise in laughter after raising funds

CAMANCHE — Dave Grim looked more like an ice cream sundae Wednesday than a Camanche Middle School physical education teacher.

With a half-gallon of vanilla ice cream coating the top of his head, chocolate syrup dripping down his forehead and sprinkles draped over his face, Grim was fulfilling a prize for Dalton Weber.

Weber raised $314 for Hoops for Heart, giving him the highest total of any Camanche middle schooler, and providing him an opportunity to douse the veteran PE teacher with vanilla ice cream and all the fixings.

“I was surprised, that even though it was only for about 30 seconds, when the ice cream was on top of my head, it was really cold,” Grim said. “I guess it was brain freeze as they say.”

Brain freeze wasn't the only affliction middle schoolers handed out Wednesday.

Students duct-taped Principal Justin Shaffer to the gymnasium wall and PE teacher Ashley Lansing received a face-full of silly string during an assembly that featured a celebration for Hoops for Heart, a national organization focused on heart health.

“This is a great way to involve the community,” Lansing said. “And it’s a great way to open the eyes of the students.”

Fundraising consists of door-to-door sales, selling T-shirts and seeking funds from teachers, family and friends.

Lansing reintroduced the program when she started teaching four years ago at Camanche Middle School, and she plans special activities for students who raise the most money.

“We try to switch it (activities) up each year,” Lansing said. “But we always have done basketball.”

The assembly featured student of the month awards, entertainment and other monthly honors, all the while Shaffer was duct-taped to the wall.

Four students received the honor of doing the duct-taping. Fifth-grader Alyssa Brightman, sixth-grader Jessica May, seventh-grader Dawn Clark and eighth-grader Hollie Lind each raised the most money in their grade, giving them the opportunity to plaster Shaffer to the wall.

“It feels good to do this and a little goofy,” Clark said. “If almost feels like I’ll get in trouble for doing it.”

This is Lind’s fourth consecutive year of raising the most money for her grade, and she said this was the best reward.

Also, the sixth-grade class will receive a reception for generating the most money with more than $1,200 raised. Overall, the school raised $3,390.

“There has been a level of excitement for the activities,” Shaffer said. “There was lots of chit chat during lunch and recess, with the students asking if I’m nervous. Overall the climate of the school is positive.”

Keifer Bray also earned an award for being the top fundraiser online. She raised $130 all online, giving her the opportunity to silly string Lansing.

The event provides extra motivation for students to raise money, Grim said.

“It’s a good cause and this just gives a little extra motivation,” Grim said. “This brings kids and the community together.”
