Welcome-back win

CLINTON — Scoring in every event, the Camanche boys track and field team presented coach Mark Metzger with a terrific “welcome back” gift Tuesday evening.

The Indians piled up 171 points to win the Class B portion of the 94th annual Gateway Classic for the sixth year in a row. Camanche finished 21 points ahead of runner-up Northeast, while third-place Maquoketa had 70 points.

“We did a nice job,” Metzger said. “We did what I thought we could do.”

Metzger was in the stands for the first time this season after suffering a medical emergency on March 3. Steve Dougherty has been serving as the coach since then.

“It was a little over seven weeks ago,” Metzger said. “I was teaching, and my aorta bisected or dissected, and they had to replace the upper aorta.

“I’m feeling good. It’s a long recovery.”

Metzger’s presence gave the Indians a boost, according to senior Derek Harksen.

“It’s awesome having him here,” Harksen said. “It gives us extra power to keep going.”

Harksen continued his strong season by winning every event in which he entered. Individually, he won the 400- and 200-meter dashes, and he also anchored the Indians’ winning entries in the 400 and 1,600 relays. He was most pleased with the 400, which he won in 49.88 seconds.

“I finally got in the 49s,” Harksen said after turning in the fourth-fastest time in the state this season. “I’d like to be a little faster in the 200. I’m good with the 400.”

Harksen won the 200 in 21.90. He teamed with Easton McDaniel, Quan Matthew and Brady Beal to win the 400 relay in 45.38, and joined Will Seeser, Beal and Jeremiah Jones to win the 1,600 relay in 3:33.12.

The Indians also won the shuttle hurdle relay (Blake Bialas, Jimmy Zhang, Jesse Everhart and Beal in 1:06.59) and the 800 relay (McDaniel, Seeser, Jones and Matthew in 1:35.85.
