CLINTON — Davenport Central won three close singles matches to make the difference in a 5-4 win against Clinton on Senior NIght on Thursday at the Ashford Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils won the matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles by a total of seven game to spoil the meet that was moved indoors because of the weather.

“Senior night is always emotional and makes everyone reflect on themselves and the team,” Clinton coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “I hope when this group of seniors reflects on their career, they remember the integrity that they showed on the courts. It is very tough for young men to lose 4-5 in a meet like we had tonight, when both teams’ emotions are high, but our character and integrity never waived.”

Evan Hood and Colin Nelson led the River Kings, winning in both singles and doubles.

“Colin Nelson stole the show tonight,” Mitchell said. “In doubles, Sameer (Ansari) and Colin were down the entire match, but they stayed mentally focused and won the last three games, winning 10-8. In singles, Colin played like a man on a mission coming from behind to win 11-10, 7-3 in the tiebreaker.”

The River Kings host the Clinton Invitational today, starting at 9 a.m. at Max Lynn Courts.
