Camanche Fire Department installs officers at banquet

CAMANCHE — New officers were recently announced for the Camanche Volunteer Fire Department.

Officers announced at a recent banquet included: Chief: Dave Schutte; First Assistance Chief: Jeff Moore; Second Assistant Chief: Duane Wiese; Captain and President: Greg Nelson; Captain: Allen Schutte; Lieutenants: Tom Pruett, Jeff Hackney, Danny Weller and Jim Sowle; Vice President: Eric Dau; Secretary/Treasurer: Jesse Foster; Trustee: Mike Anderson; Works and Projects committee: Kevin Decker, Travis Snodgrass and Todd Powers.

Special recognition awards also were given.

The Aubrey Wilson Memorial award for Volunteer of the Year 2013 was presented to Allen Schutte. The award is named after the late Fire Chief Aubrey Wilson, a 30-year member of the department, who died in February of 2006 after battling cancer.

The award is presented each year to a volunteer who exhibits the qualities and characteristic that Wilson was known for. Being a dedicated volunteer, responding to a high volume of calls, going above and beyond the normal call of duty and being an overall great member of the department, are items considered for this award. This is the eighth year for the award.

Allen joined the department on Nov. 14, 1992. He was promoted to lieutenant in August 2003. He made captain in 2008. He is certified as FF1 and 2, officer 1 and 2, and paramedic. He also is an arson investigator.

Years of Service awards

n Capt. Greg Nelson — 30 years of service. Nelson joined the department on Aug. 7, 1983. He was promoted to captain in 2003. He is certified as FF1 and 2, and is and EMT. He also is an arson investigator.

He has served as the department’s president for more than 10 years. He is the department’s longest tenured active volunteer.

n Lt Jim Sowle — 15 years of service. Sowle joined the department on Jan. 14, 1999. He is certified as FF1 and 2, officer 1 and 2, and he became a paramedic in August 1991. He became an arson investigator in March 2012. He was hired as a full-time firefighter/paramedic for the city of Camanche on Jan. 30, 2012. He was promoted to lieutenant on May 12, 2012.
