Camanche man pleads guilty to conspiracy

CLINTON — A Camanche man charged with a Class B felony in connection with an August 2013 robbery submitted an Alford plea of guilty Thursday to an amended charge of conspiracy to commit a felony.

Bryce Clark, 19, did not admit any guilt for the robbery on Aug. 27, 2013, for which two other men have each been sentenced to serve up to 10 years in prison. However, he told District Court Judge Henry Latham that the state has enough evidence to prove he committed the offense for which he was set to go to trial on Monday.

“I believe this plea is in my client’s best interest,” Defense Attorney Harry DeLange said.

Clark’s original charge of first-degree robbery is a Class B felony that can carry as much as 25 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence. Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf agreed to dismiss that charge and instead let Clark plead guilty to the Class B felony of conspiracy to commit a felony, which carries up to five years in prison.

As part of the plea agreement, Wolf will recommend a deferred judgment. The court will be bound by the agreement and if the sentencing judge rejects it, Clark can withdraw his plea of guilty. Wolf declined to comment on why the plea agreement was offered to Clark, saying his reasons will be explained in the sentencing hearing.

According to court documents, Clark’s cousin, Dylon White, as well as Destin Clark, approached a 36-year-old Illinois man in the area of the Clinton Lawn Cemetery and took him at gunpoint to the Wild Rose Casino & Resort lobby. The victim was then forced to withdraw money out of the ATM.

According to the affidavit, White said in an interview in the Clinton County Jail that he discussed breaking into cars and robbing someone with his cousin, Bryce Clark, and Destin Clark, while at his cousin’s home in Camanche. Court documents continue that White said his cousin gave him a .22 caliber revolver and arranged for a ride for him to Wal-Mart. White and Destin Clark also stated that Bryce Clark arranged for a ride for them, following the robbery, with the agreement that he would get some of the money, according to the affidavit.

White and Destin Clark each pleaded guilty to a lesser included charge of second-degree robbery and were ordered to serve up to 10 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of seven years in prison.

Bryce Clark’s sentencing is set for 10 a.m. June 26.
