Camanche juniors take 2nd in 1A doubles

ANKENY — Lindsey Grams and Kylie Vogel had reason to feel good Friday, but they also felt frustration after finishing as the Class 1A runners-up in doubles at the girls tennis state tournament.

"It's frustrating because of how close we were and how many chances they had, but they weren't upset at all," Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said of her two juniors.

The Camanche duo gave Lindsay McGonegle and Lindsay McManus all they could handle before the Waterloo Columbus duo prevailed 7-6 (4), 7-6 (11).

"It's tough that we were so close, but I feel it was a good accomplishment," Grams said.

The setting was new to Grams but not the others. Vogel finished second to teammate Jalyn Deering in last year's singles championship, and has beaten Davenport Assumption's Haley Resnick, who won this year's singles crown on Friday. McGonegle and McManus took second to a pair of teammates in doubles last year after placing third in 2011.

"It was my first time, so I was a little nervous," Grams said. "At first it was really bad, then in the middle I settled down, but in the tiebreakers I got nervous again."

Despite the nerves, Grams and Vogel appeared poised for an upset in the opening set.

"In the first set, we went up 6-5 and were up 40-15 and had the opportunity to take the set there," Montgomery said.

The Columbus duo came back to win that game and the next to force a tiebreaker, which they also won.

"The Columbus kids did a rally good job of fighting off points," Montgomery said.

But, the Indians came right back in the second set.

"We were up 5-3 but just couldn't close out sets," Montgomery said.

Once again, McManus and McGonegle rallied and forced a tiebreaker, this one going 24 games before Columbus pulled out the 13-11 win.

"I think it says more about our kids, on how close they played. They didn't hang their heads in the second set," Montgomery said. "It says something about them."

She said the Indians came in with a good game plan, which they executed well for the most part.

"The goal was to take away the net from Columbus," Montgomery said. "We did it at times."

Grams said: "We dominated the net pretty good. With the wind, it was hard for them to lob on one side, so we had to take advantage of going to the net."

Montgomery wasn't surprised by the way Vogel and Grams played.

"It's their second year together, and they're really good friends," she said. "Kylie does a good job of getting her first serves in and setting up things for Lindsey at the net."

Grams said: "It's a big advantage for us because we play a lot of sports together. We pick each other up."

She said she wouldn't be surprised if the duo was back and threatening for a title again next year. And Montgomery said the whole team was energized after not making it to the final four in team competition this year.

"Just listening to them talk, they're already excited about coming back next year," Montgomery said. "We were all disappointed with our loss to Assumption (in the opening round of team regionals). I don't think that to expect to get to state every year is bad."
