'Now is time' for Indians HOF

---- — CAMANCHE — First-year Camanche athletic director Todd Borrison is already brainstorming ways to acknowledge the Indians’ great sporting legacies. Less than a week into the 2013 school year, he said Camanche High will unveil an athletics hall of fame in the winter.

It’s just time, he said.

“We’re here to make our athletic programs better,” Borrison said, adding that this year will mark the school’s 50-year celebration. “Part of that is that we want to acknowledge the past and we want our kids to work to get on that hall of fame.”

The director set Jan. 24, 2014 — a pack-the-gym night for the boys and girls basketball teams — as the date of the inaugural class unveiling. Borrison has already formed a nine-person selection committee. He’s encouraging community members to submit nominations to the athletics office at the high school and has envisioned 10-14 names being inducted in year one of the balloting.

“We’re going to focus on the pioneers of our program,” Borrison said. “It’s going to be a bigger class than normal.”

The Camanche committee will use a “three-tier system” for selecting athletes. The members will judge an athlete’s success at Camanche, college and professional/coaching levels. Inductees must have graduated from the high school at least 10 years before selection. Coaches still working in the school will be considered as well as whole teams.

All nominations will be considered so long as they fall under the criteria.

Borrison wouldn’t name specific people he believes will make the inaugural class, although he was excited to talk about the history of the program. The reason for a big first class is because Borrison feels there are too many of the “pioneers” who deserve to be inducted. The induction is planned to be an annual event, with inductees tapering off in years two and three.

“With this system, everyone who deserves to be in is eventually going to get in at some point,” he said.

To nominate a Camanche athlete, visit the high school athletics office. Called-in submissions will be accepted as well; Borrison can be reached at (563) 259-3010.
