Sabers get the worm on chilly night

CLINTON — Running on an outdoor track can be hard to be acclimated to following an indoor track season.

Clinton, Central DeWitt and Camanche were three of five schools who braved the early spring Tuesday night.

DeWitt won the meet with 119 points, while Clinton finished in second place by turning in 93 points. Camanche finished third with 62 points.

“We feel pretty good about where we ended up tonight,” Clinton coach June Wilden said. “I think our kids are just now starting to figure it out, but for tonight being the first outdoor meet, it was a good meet.”

It was especially a good meet for Clinton distance runner Kim Kaster, who won the 3,200-meter run as well as in the 1,500.

“She had a really great night,” Wilden said. “It wasn’t a surprise those two stood out. They work hard in practice and get done what we want them to get done.”

Kaster also ran in the 800 run and 1,600 relay, so she had a busy night.

“It was a lot of races, and I just had to try my best,” Kaster said. “I try to take it one race at a time, and just focus on one race at a time as they come.”

Kaster took the lead near the end of the first lap during the 1,500 run, and once she passed Camanche’s Libby Schnoor, Kaster sailed past everyone else.

“I had a pretty good feel with the 1,500 being in the middle of the 800 and 3,200, and I wanted to see where the other girls were,” Kaster said. “Once I took the lead, I tried to go full-stride with it as much as I could.”

Kaster wasn’t the only River Queen who won an individual event at the Early Bird meet. Elle Tubbs had a 4-foot-10 leap in the high jump, and Erica Hammond won the shot put with a throw of 37-4.
