Clinton Symphony Orchestra to perform this weekend

STERLING, Ill. — The Clinton Symphony Orchestra will perform this weekend in Sterling, Ill.

The orchestra’s 2014 Young Artist, pianist Cyrus Colah, of Clinton, will perform a concerto with the orchestra at the 7:30 p.m. concert at Centennial Auditorium in at Sterling High School.

All students are admitted free to the concert in his honor.

Colah will perform the first movement from Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto with the orchestra.

Also on Saturday’s program is “Peter and the Wolf.”

Composer Sergi Prokofiev uses musical themes and particular instruments of the orchestra to portray each animal and character in the story. Clinton resident Rob Engelson will narrate the story, with conductor Brian Dollinger leading the orchestra.

Gateway Contemporary Ballet members will portray the characters on stage.

“‘Peter and the Wolf’ is just one of the classics of childhood, and it gains additional interest in later life as one understands the masterful use of story, musical themes and instruments,” Robert Whipple, the orchestra’s Executive Director, said.

The ballet also will join forces with the orchestra to portray animals from Saint-Saens “Carnival of the Animals.” Engelson also will participate in this, reading recently-composed poems by Don Wooten.

Adult tickets are $15, available in advance at Tegeler Music in Clinton, Fitzgeralds Pharmacy in Morrison, Ill., and Grummert’s Hardware in Sterling, or at the door of the concert.

Due to uncertain driving conditions, Community State Bank and the symphony will provide a bus from Clinton, through Fulton, Ill., and Morrison to the concert site in Sterling. Information and reservations may be made with Marianne Jensen at 243-5958. Space is limited.
