Clinton Co. Supervisors move forward on DeWitt annex

CLINTON — Clinton County officials went over plans for the new satellite office in DeWitt, plans that will be presented to the public early next year, during a meeting Monday afternoon.

With the near completion of Phase II of the Clinton County Satellite Office project, which renovated the rest of the interior of the former DeWitt Candlelight building, the county is moving forward with the final phase of the project. County Building Manager Corey Johnson previously expressed the opinion that it would benefit the county in the long run to finish the project this upcoming year, rather than wait.

Two public hearings will be held on the project on Jan. 6, 2014, to solicit public comments. A 10 a.m. meeting will be held in conference room B at the Clinton County Administration Building, 1900 N. Third St. and a 6 p.m. meeting will be held in the Clinton County Fairgrounds auditorium in DeWitt.

The Clinton County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Rick Lincoln and Johnson sat down Monday afternoon with IIW Engineer Mike Ruden to discuss details of the 37-foot-by-92-foot garage, which is part of the project that is estimated at $400,000. This includes a 15 percent contingency. Ruden explained that the design for the garage is actually pretty simple.

“Four walls, a ceiling and a roof,” Lincoln said.

The 3,404-square-foot building will include a restroom, a storage room and stalls for six law enforcement vehicles. The building will use the same standard shingles on its roof as the main building, but will have steel siding.

Lincoln spoke about the need for the garage, especially in the winter. He pointed out that many of the deputies might not have a place in the area to warm their cars and clean their windshields. He pointed out than all emergency departments, whether police or fire departments, need a place to store their vehicles.

“For the long term, this will be a very nice building for a long time,” Lincoln said.
