County conference room to get IT upgrades

CLINTON — The Clinton County information technology and maintenance departments will add technology to conference room B at the administration building.

The Board of Supervisors approved a proposal designed to increase transparency in its meeting room and reduce the use of paper. IT Director Becky Smith presented the proposal Monday morning; that plan includes five Lenovo Twist laptops and three flat-screen televisions.

“We can really cut down on the amount of paper,” Smith said about the new system.

During the weekly meetings, the board reviews a variety of reports, resolutions and other documents. Smith told the supervisors they could look at anything in their agenda packets, including maps, on the laptops. According to the proposal, this would not only cut down paper and the use of toner and energy for the copies, but would also make the supervisors more mobile.

The update also includes the placement of one 60-inch and two 42-inch flatscreen televisions in strategic places in the room. The largest one will be placed directly behind the board. This will allow the audience and the board to view documents and presentations. County Auditor Eric Van Lancker pointed out this would be great during drainage district discussions where people have to crowd around one map.

“The money’s there and everything. But we certainly don’t want to turn over your meeting room without your permission,” Van Lancker said before Supervisor Jill Davisson made a motion to authorized Smith to proceed with the upgrades.

The equipment will cost $12,810.67. Smith has that amount in her current budget. She said she had some extra funds because the county did not build towers as they had planned.

County Treasurer Rhonda McIntyre asked if a similar system could be added to conference room D, where she holds her tax sales. She would be willing to pay for the technology out of the proceeds from the sale. Smith will discuss the issue with her. Chairman John Staszewski also suggested they look into the possibility of a mobile unit.
