CHS seniors star on Senior Night

CLINTON — Erin Wenzel and Jordan Nelson saved the best for last. The senior duo combined for 41 points in the River Queens' 64-45 win over visiting Burlington on Friday night at Yourd Gym on Senior Night.

Wenzel poured in a game-high and career-best 27 points to lead Clinton (5-14, 4-11) to its second consecutive victory.

A tight first quarter brought a scary moment for Clinton when sophomore Elle Tubbs was fouled on a 3-point attempt and landed awkwardly on her foot. Tubbs was helped off the court, forcing teammate Halle Davis to come off the bench and shoot the free throws. The freshman guard knocked down one midway through the quarter.

The 6-foot-2 inch Tubbs came back with seven minutes left in the second quarter and the River Queens turned up the heat.

A 3-point basket by Davis gave Clinton a 19-16 lead and sparked a game-changing run. Starting with Davis’ triple, the River Queens went on a 16-0 run, extending their lead to 32-16.

“When the game was at 16-16, we knew defensive pressure was going to be the key. We needed to pick up the intensity, and the girls did,” Clinton coach Mike Halac said.

Nelson scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to help Clinton to a 37-20 lead. They then turned to the other senior in the second half.

Wenzel scored 17 after the half to ensure a win on Senior Night.

“We talked about playing for the seniors, which we did. My teammates did a great job tonight and without them I wouldn’t have the 27 points,” Wenzel said.

Meanwhile, Halac was more than pleased with the effort with only three games remaining in the regular season.

“Especially on Senior Night for the girls to play like they did. We wanted to send Jordan and Erin out the way they deserve. They’ve given blood, sweat and tears to this program,” Halac said.

The River Queens travel to neighboring Camanche for an afternoon game today.

“Two wins in a row gives us confidence. The local rivalry is always a battle; we’ll be ready,” Halac said.
