BREAKING: Injuries during morning bus crash at 13th Avenue

UPDATE: Official statement from the Clinton Police Department

CLINTON — UPDATE: From the Clinton Police Department — On November 5, 2013 at 7:05 a.m., officers from the Clinton Police Department and Clinton Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of 13th Avenue North and 3rd Street. The collision involved a Clinton Community School District bus and a pick-ip truck.

The school bus was travelling northbound on 3rd Street, when a westbound pick-up truck entered the intersection from 13th Avenue North and struck the passengers' side of the bus. The impact of the collision resulted in the school bus rolling onto its side. In addition to the bus driver, there were also four students on the bus.

The four students were transported to Mercy Medical Center by the Clinton Fire Department, where they were being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the school bus and the driver of the pick-up truck both refused medical attention. The driver of the pick-up  truck was cited for Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device.

Note: Criminal charges are merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

ORIGINAL STORY: Clinton police this morning responded to a two-vehicle accident on 13th Avenue North involving a pickup truck and a school bus. The bus contained four occupants and a driver. A press release from the Clinton Community School District confirmed that all four high school special education students were taken to Mercy Medical in Clinton and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the bus refused treatment and was released.

According to Police Chief Brian Guy, witnesses said a pickup truck, heading westbound on 13th Avenue North ran a red light and collided with a northbound bus traveling on Third Street. Clinton School District Superintendent Deb Olson confirmed there were children on the bus at the time of the crash.

"As a district and a community, we are fortunate in having such a rapid response by our emergency care providers in the fire and police department," Olson said in a press release.
