Guilty plea entered in Ashford theft

Former Ashford employee admits stealing $10,000

CLINTON — A former Ashford University employee has admitted to stealing more than $10,000 from the organization.

Stacy Powers’ voice broke Thursday as she pleaded guilty to first-degree theft.

Theft in the first degree is a class C felony, which carries with it as many as 10 years in prison and a fine of between $1,000 and $10,000. Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf will recommend a suspended incarceration and 500 hours of community service.

A charge of tampering with records also will be dismissed.

The charge was filed against Powers, 28, of 1505 Lawrence Ave., Camanche, on Jan. 31. According to court documents, Powers served as the Student Development and Activities coordinator for Ashford University between August 2008 and April 27, 2012, before being placed on administrative leave.

She was in charge of the oversight of the Student Government Association account, according to the affidavit.

A police report concerning an internal theft was filed by a representative of Ashford University on May 7, 2012. According to court documents, Ashford’s Associate Director of Human Resources reported that Powers used the student government account to make unauthorized withdrawals and debit card purchases between Jan. 2, 2009, and April 26, 2012.

Powers admitted in court Thursday that these transactions were for personal use and not for university business.

A sentencing date has been set for 9 a.m. May 9.
