Defendant granted new attorney

CLINTON — A District Court judge approved a request for a new attorney from a Clinton man facing kidnapping and domestic abuse charges.

Dewayne Patterson, 38, told Judge Gary McKenrick that he was not satisfied with Bruce Ingham as his counsel, feeling the case was taking too long. He added there was “time-sensitive” evidence that has not been retrieved.

“I don’t feel that any progress is being made on my case,” Patterson said. “I’m just sitting here for no reason.”

Patterson was arrested at 12:20 p.m. April 4 on a warrant for first-degree kidnapping, a class A felony, and domestic abuse-assault, a class D felony. His girlfriend reported that he held her against her will for more than three days.

Ingham told the court Thursday that Patterson has been a delight to work with. He said he has not done a great deal with the case yet, as the state is still producing evidence.

Patterson’s trial was set for Sept. 30, but Ingham recently had a family emergency out of state, which took approximately a week of his time.

The trial was continued to Dec. 16. Ingham told McKenrick he felt he could be ready by that time.

McKenrick was hesitant to assign Patterson a new attorney. He told the defendant that this could delay his trial even more.

“This is my life,” Patterson said.

He insisted on having a new attorney, saying that even if getting an attorney from the Dubuque office caused a delay, something would get done.

“Nothing’s getting done (now), “ Patterson said.

McKenrick approved the defendant’s motion for new counsel.
