LumberKings win 2 of 3 over weekend

CEDAR RAPIDS — After sweeping a doubleheader Saturday, the Clinton LumberKings dropped the finale of a four-game road series in Cedar Rapids on Sunday afternoon.

They will take a 2-2 record into Tuesday’s home opener, starting a six-game homestand against Lake County and For Wayne. Right-hander Tommy Burns will make his Midwest League debut in Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. contest.

Clinton recorded just five hits and after a two-run first inning, struggled against hard-throwing right-hander Kohl Stewart, in a 4-2 loss. The Kernels broke a 2-2 tie when second baseman Logan Wade deposited reliever Blake Holovach’s offering over the fence in left field in the seventh inning.

Stewart, the No. 4 overall pick by Minnesota in last year’s draft, allowed two first-inning hits, the second an RBI triple by Jack Reinheimer. Austin Wilson scored Reinheimer on a groundout to third, but the Wilson groundout began a stretch where Stewart retired 13 of the next 15 batters.

While the LumberKings bats were silenced, the Kernels pounded out four hits in their first seven plate appearances, the third being a Mitch Garver solo blast leading off the second, tying the game at 2-2.

Garver’s home run matched the Kernels’ scoring output from the bottom of the first. Cedar Rapids’ Thursday night hero, Bryan Haar, laced a two-out RBI double in that frame, scoring Joel Licon who drew a one-out walk.

LumberKings starter Jake Zokan settled down after Garver’s long ball.

Hitting was not a problem for Clinton on Saturday.

The LumberKings outscored the Kernels 10-1 in the doubleheader sweep. Clinton won the first game 4-1 and the second 6-0.
