Kings win title at Dunsworth Relays

DAVENPORT — Deshond Robinson anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay, and that victory gave Clinton the margin of victory as it won the title at the Ira Dunsworth Relays in boys track and field Thursday night. It was the first time Clinton had won the event since 2003.

Robinson had a hand — or his feet — in 40 of Clinton’s points, while Nate Harden scored 16 with runner-up finishes in the shot put and discus.

The River Kings and Muscatine entered the 1,600, the final event of the meet, tied for second place behind Bettendorf. Clinton’s foursome of Marquis Robinson, Eric Maddasion, Delante Chamberlain and Deshond Robinson won in 3 minutes, 29.95 seconds, while Muscatine was second at 3:31.42. Bettendorf did not score in the race.

“We were pretty confident with Robinson anchoring,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said.

The River Kings edged Muscatine by two points, 80-78, to claim first place, with Bettendorf taking third with 73. Central DeWitt tied for seventh in the 12-team field with 7 points.

“This is a tough meet meet because they only score six in each event,” Smith said.

Deshond Robinson used a late burst to beat Bettendorf’s Gabe Rees in the 100-meter dash. Robinson’s time was 11.10 seconds, with Rees at 11.17. Clinton freshman Barrion Collins placed fifth in 11.50. Robinson’s next win came in the next event, the 400. The Class 4A defending state champion ran the 4ace in 49.50 seconds, finishing more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Jack Reemtsma of Davenport Central.

Robinson recorded a third individual victory in the 200, again finishing ahead of runner-up Rees. Robinson’s time was 22.57, while Rees ran 22.94. Marquis Robinson placed fourth in 23.56.

Harden had a personal best of 51 feet in the shot put, and was headed for the victory until Bettendorf’s Wade Webster uncorked a throw of 54-11.5 on his final attempt. Harden threw 144-4 in the discus, second to Bettendorf’s Jess Jacobsen (156-8).
