Rebels lead All-Big East baseball picks

Preston's Bormann named MVP

BELLEVUE — Northeast received nine distinctions when the Big East Conference announced its all-conference teams. First-year coach Tyler Howe was named co-coach of the year alongside Lisbon's Ryan Stensland. Four of Howe's players joined him with first-team honors.

Preston's Colton Bormann was the conference MVP and the Trojans' lone first-teamer. Through seven starts, Bormann compiled a 1.89 earned-run average with 62 strikeouts. He was 4-1 and opponents batted a lowly .134 against him.

Ben Hildebrandt, Charlie Marcucci, Jared Henfrey and Michael Hartung nabbed first-team nods for Northeast, while teammates Cole Dickey, Tevin Stoecker and Nick Wall were put on the second team and Ketzalli Dondiego was honorable mention all-conference. The Rebels won 22 games in the regular season, finishing co-Big East champs with Lisbon with a 12-4 conference record.

Each first-teamer was integral in Northeast's success. Marcucci led the team with 36 stolen bases and 44 hits; Hildebrandt finished with 37 hits and 28 RBIs, both good for second on the team; Henfrey received high marks for his 7-1 pitching record to go along with 25 hits and 22 RBIs; and Hartung came on late in the season as one of the top second baseman with 10 runs and nine RBIs in the last month.

Calamus-Wheatland's Justin Alden (28 hits, 25 runs, 23 RBIs, 26 stolen bases) and Christian Hansen (.321 average, 18 runs) also were named to the first team, with John Diercks, Nick Houzenga and Nolan Christiansen making the second team and Austin Houzenga getting honorable mention. Jake Gerlach and Isaac Sturm were first-teamers for Marquette alongside Bellevue's Cole Reeg.

Others on the first team were Connor Woodward (Lisbon pitcher), Hunter Caspers (Lisbon catcher), Ryan Light (Lisbon outfielder) and Casey Lasack (Midland utility player). Seth Boysen and Derek Harksen represented Camanche on the second team, and Lucas Laufenberg was honorable mention for Prince of Peace.
