CVB director hiring announced

CLINTON — A new director has been hired to lead the Clinton Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Carrie Donaire of Clinton, will begin duties as CVB Director prior to June 1, Nathan Sondgeroth, president and CEO of the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce, announced today.

Donaire is a Clinton native and a graduate of Clinton High School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a Master's of Education with a focus on International Education from Framingham State University in Massachusetts.

After her undergraduate work, Donaire served for two years as a food security and agriculture program volunteer with the United States Peace Corps in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Following her service in the Peace Corps, Donaire remained in Nicaragua to teach secondary-level ancient world history and mythology at the American Nicaraguan School in Managua, Nicaragua.

Also during her years in Nicaragua, Donaire was the director of business development for Grupo Bioscientifica, SA, a private sector company managing the supply chain for processed tropical botanical material for clients worldwide. During her time with the company, Donaire prepared marketing materials in both English and Spanish as well as organized Nicaragua’s first-ever international conference on biotechnology.

“I have many ideas about how Clinton can extend the best hospitality to our guests from near and far," Donaire said. "For example, when my friends visit, they are delighted to discover that we have a winery, small cafes, niche shops, our own baseball team and even a theater on the Mississippi River. The parks and outdoor amenities speak for themselves. Clinton has so much potential – family businesses that have been here for generations, new business ventures, young energy, new technology – we can put Clinton on the map for tourists and business travelers alike. I am looking so forward to playing an active role in promoting the community and its assets.”

When asked about Donaire’s hiring, Sondgeroth said, "Carrie is an experienced organizer, communicator, connector and a natural 'people person.' Our selection committee had no doubt that she will excel as CVB director. We can’t wait for her to join our team of professionals and dedicated volunteers."

As CVB director, Donaire will be responsible for leading efforts of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, which include:

• Directing sales and marketing efforts designed to attract overnight visitors (either leisure or business travelers) to the Clinton area;

• Greeting and welcoming tourist groups and conventions that come to the Clinton area; and

• Working with hotels, area attractions and the local communities to foster a welcoming environment that attract both leisure and business travelers.

Donaire is fluent in Spanish and resides in Clinton with her family.

    Brady Ernst is having a summer to remember.
    The rising River King senior is spending the summer playing for the Iowa Barnstormers traveling basketball team. This weekend they're playing in the Fab48 tournament in Las Vegas.
    "I'm playing with a great group of guys," Ernst said in a telephone interview. "We lost our last game (Thursday) night, but it's all about getting better."
    River Kings coach Nick Lawrence said Ernst had worked on a few new aspects to his game.
    "What he has worked on and what we would like to see him do is step outside and shoot a little bit more," Lawrence said. "I've watched him play a little bit this summer, and he's made five or six that I've seen."
