CLINTON — A benefit for a Lyons Middle School teacher will be held this weekend.
The fundraiser will honor Robin Pladna, a computer teacher at Lyons Middle School, who has stage four breast cancer. The event will start at 1 p.m. with a bicycle ride, with a 5K to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Clinton Pony Fields. Registration is from noon to 2 p.m. A Zumba dance party will be at 4:30 p.m. at Manny’s II, with registration at 3:30 p.m., followed by a dinner and dance until 8 p.m.
Participants may choose one or all events by registering by Friday online at https://robinpladna.eventbrite.com or same day registration.
Committee member Tricia Petersen said the event started with a small fundraiser and morphed into a much larger gathering, entitled Ride Run & Rockin Robin.
“When you get the phone call saying someone you know, who has helped many children over the years, including all three of my own, has a diagnosis of stage four breast cancer, your heart just sinks,” Petersen said. “It doesn’t take long for word to spread. Then I get that second phone call from my sidekick Tiffany Harris saying let’s do our annual Zumba Party in Pink fundraiser and donate to Robin this year, followed by the phone call from Troy Dodd saying he wanted to ride for Robin and that other teachers and students wanted to run for Robin and just that quick we formed the benefit called Ride Run & Rockin Robin.”
Hannah Birt-Steeg, an eighth grader at Lyons Middle School, made bracelets that say “Fighting for Robin Pladna” and made mason jars with the breast cancer ribbon with the saying “Penies for Pladna,” on them to pass out to classmates.
“The community has Robin in their hearts and prayers,” Petersen said. “We all felt the need to go the distance with her and show her support during her fight. She is a very humble person, always worrying about others and this is how we would like to show her how much she is loved.”
Participants are encouraged to wear purple shirts, Pladna’s favorite color. An auction also will be held during the event at Manny’s.
To make a monetary donation, drop off money at any Gateway State Bank location making checks payable to Robin Pladna Benefit Fund.
