Sabers put 3 on all-district baseball team

CLINTON — Central DeWitt led all area schools on the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's 2013 all-district teams.

In the Class 3A Southeast District, the Sabers landed three players — catcher Jake Thuman, outfielder Austin Lechtenberg and utility man TJ Sikkema — on the first team, and placed pitcher Max Steffens on the second team.

DeWitt won a school-record 32 games this season, with each player having a pivotal role. Thuman led DeWitt with a .457 average; Lechtenberg had a team-leading 13 doubles with 61 hits; Sikkema led hitters with 63 hits and 38 RBIs, with 52 strikeouts and a 1.31 ERA as a pitcher, and Steffens posted a 7-2 record and led the Sabers in innings pitched.

In all, 16 players from seven local schools were honored, including all four Clinton Herald schools that climbed to the Iowa substate rounds in their respective classes.

Also in 3A, the Northeast District featured two Maquoketa Cardinals. Trent Bollman landed on the first team with 37 hits and 22 stolen bases. Teammate Tyler Regan was a second-teamer, leading the Cardinals with a team-leading .372 average and 27 RBIs.

At Clinton High, second baseman Cody Collender represented the state-bound River Kings on the first team in 4A. He leads the team in home runs (nine), RBIs (41), stolen bases (29), slugging (.744) and average (.429) while helping Clinton to 25 wins this season and a berth in next week's state tournament.

Three of Collender's teammates joined him with second-team recognition: shortstop Cody Nolan (51 hits, 31 RBIs), freshman pitcher Cole Pennock (10-3, 53 strikeouts) and third baseman Dustin Caldwell (.394, 35 runs).

The River Kings look to continue their playoff run on Wednesday against Ankeny in Des Moines' Principal Park.

Five local players represent their schools on the 1A teams. Colton Bormann, the Big East Conference Most Valuable Player, represented Preston with a first-team nod in the Northeast. The Trojans were knocked out by Van Buren of Keosauqua in Tuesday's substate match in Iowa City. Bormann led Preston with three home runs and a 6-1 record, 1.52 ERA and 80 strikeouts.

Marquette Catholic's Isaac Sturm joined Bormann on the first team as a utility player with 55 strikeouts as a pitcher and a .374 average as a batter. Two other Mohawks — catcher Jake Gerlach and utility man Jesse Banowetz — received second-team honors. In the 1A Southeast District, Calamus-Wheatland's John Diercks was a second-team selection.

Finally, in 2A, the Northeast District featured a Northeast Rebel. Outfielder Charlie Marcucci received first-team honors after batting .462 and scoring 38 runs to lead his team. The 24-win Rebels made it to Tuesday's substate where they were knocked out by Mount Vernon at Solon.

Below is a list of first and second teamers joining local players.
