Boys basketball roundup: Monticello trips up Northeast

GOOSE LAKE — Derek Manternach hit four 3-pointers in the second half to deflate the Northeast Rebels on their home court Friday night. The Monticello Panthers went on to win 64-52 in River Valley Conference boys basketball.

The Panthers scored 24 points in the third quarter when Manternach would nail three of his four second half 3-pointers. Manternach would end up with 17 points, but he was not the leading scorer. Sawyer Herman scored a game-high 20 points.

Matt Haferbier scored 16 points followed by Nick Wall’s 10 points.

 

Irish handle Cal-Wheat

WHEATLAND — Nic Roth scored 21 points in Prince of Peace’s 59-34 win over Calamus-Wheatland.

The Irish started to pull away in the second half, when they outscored the Warriors 17-9 in the third quarter, then 23-14 in the fourth quarter.

Lucas Laufenberg also scored 15 points for the Irish.

 

Zaruba outscores foe

SPRINGVILLE — Easton Valley guard Chase Zaruba scored 33 points Friday night. His opponent, Cedar Valley Christian, scored just 29.

The River Hawks scored 94 as a whole, leading to their eighth win of the season. Easton Valley had more made 3-pointers (13) than Cedar Valley Christian had made total baskets (12).

There wasn’t much to be worried about for Easton Valley. The score at the end of the first quarter was 22-6, and at the half, it was 48-16.

Craiton Andresen also found double digit points with 16 as well as Zach Peiffer (14).

 

Thunder struggles

MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — West Carroll trailed by just one point at halftime to Pearl City on Friday night, but the Wolves scored 21 in the third quarter and 22 in the final eight minutes to topple the Thunder 76-64.

Cody Kluck and TJ Wingert scored 22 and 20 points against West Carroll.

West Carroll’s leading scorer was Trevor Jones with 18 points.

  • Interest in Ernst rises as his game does, too

    Brady Ernst is having a summer to remember.
    The rising River King senior is spending the summer playing for the Iowa Barnstormers traveling basketball team. This weekend they're playing in the Fab48 tournament in Las Vegas.
    "I'm playing with a great group of guys," Ernst said in a telephone interview. "We lost our last game (Thursday) night, but it's all about getting better."
    River Kings coach Nick Lawrence said Ernst had worked on a few new aspects to his game.
    "What he has worked on and what we would like to see him do is step outside and shoot a little bit more," Lawrence said. "I've watched him play a little bit this summer, and he's made five or six that I've seen."
