Garden Walk 2014: A stroll through beauty

CLINTON — Clinton-area residents will have a chance to walk among beautiful trees, flowers, fountains and ponds for the benefit of garden education.

The Clinton County Master Gardeners has been hosting the annual garden walk for three years. This year’s event will feature six Clinton locations from noon to 4 p.m. June 22.

“This provides an opportunity for people in the community to see some gardens in the area,” Master Gardener Debbie Neels said.

Participants will visit five private gardens, as well as Bickelhaupt Arboretum. Regina Dahl is excited to have people walking through the garden she and her husband, Jerry, have worked on for at least five years. One of the highlights of her garden is the pondless waterfall the couple installed themselves.

“I think it’s always nice to see other people’s yards and get ideas and see pretty things,” Dahl said.

Carol Mabee has fun in her garden. It is not always pristine or perfectly planned, with some wild milkweed in some spots and a few weeds here or there, but she enjoys working the ground. She especially enjoys the colorful wild flowers.

“I love flowers, I love to see them; the colors,” Mabee said. “I guess nature itself is God’s way of placing beauty all around us.”

Mabee’s yard includes the wildflowers, as well as vegetable and herb gardens. She loves adding different varieties of perennials to her garden.

“If I see a new plant, if I like it, it’s hard not to try it out,” Maybee.

She also has enjoyed digging and re-digging her pool, which features Shubunkin, also known as “poor man’s koi.”

People interested in experiencing these garden sites can purchase tickets for $5 at either the Clinton County Extension Office in DeWitt and the Bickelhaupt Arboretum. Tickets also can be purchased at each garden site. All proceeds from the event go toward a horticultural scholarship and other Master Gardener educational programs.

“We have had in the past a good response, good attendance,” Neels said.

The featured gardens are: Carol and Ewing Miller, 3340 Allie Lane. Carol and Dan Mabee, 215 Thornwaldsen Place. Bickelhaupt Arboretum, 340 S. 14th St. Kathy and Dan Anderson, 1027 Carriage Hill Court. The Canticle, Sisters of St. Francis, 814 13th Ave. North. Regina and Jerry Dahl, 2228 Roosevelt St.
