Dishes, teapots decline in value

CLINTON — A Toro snowblower quickly made its way to $75 without any snow on the ground at the May 31 auction.

A Ready heater went to a happy camper for $440 and some clown pictures went to a new home for $44. A curio cabinet sold for $165, a blue recliner sold for $42 and a dresser sold at $35. A neon sign lit up a $64 bid and two nice crocks were sold for $80 and $85 each. A Victrola sold for $60, clown posters sold for $20, a nice patio set saw a bid of $95 and two bells rang up a bid of $32.

Some foreign coins sold for $12, a sterling ring saw a $37 bid, a silver half dollar sold for $12 and 2 silver certificates sold for $9. Bids for designer purses went out at $50, $80 and $100. Several were sold for $10 to $30 each. The LeCreuset pans totaled $180. An antique .22-caliber revolver fired an $85 bid while the 16-gauge single shot hit the mark with a $65 bid. An old Tumble Tank that needed work still managed to bring in a bid of $23. A candleholder lit up a $15 bid, which also tied the $15 bid for an empty Beam decanter in the shape of an automobile. A picture of a World War I soldier found a high bid of $17, which also tied the bid for an old lunch box for $17. Glass jars went to $28 and a small set of dishes held out for $35. An antique rocker went to $42.50 while two cane chairs saw a $22 bid. A large tea pot collection was sold during the auction, with several in a group bringing in $108 as high bid.

To cap off the auction, a baby buggy from the early 1940s went to a new home for $50. Prices were generally average, with the exception of the teapots, which were weak and declining in value for the past three or four years. Teapots, plates of various description, complete sets of formal dishes along with dining room tables, have continued to decline. Collect these if you enjoy them but don’t depend on them as an investment. It was a large consignment auction that lasted four hours. This morning at 10 a.m. we will be selling a very large household of antique furniture and collectibles.
