Camanche cleans out PoP

CLINTON — Both Camanche and Prince of Peace strolled into Ashford University Field a little tired Friday after arriving home in the wee hours after games Thursday night. One team looked as if it still was sleepy; the other did not.

Camanche swept the Irish (1-11) in a varsity baseball doubleheader. The Indians needed just three innings by winning 17-1, then won Game 2 7-5.

Irish coach Bob Mulholland didn’t like the way Game 1 went but was pleased about Game 2.

“I need two games out of them every night,” Mulholland said. “They fought hard in the second game, but they weren’t quite ready to go in the first one.”

The second game was a lot more competitive than the first.

Camanche, however, struck the scoreboard first in the first inning with an RBI groundout from Seth Boysen and an RBI single from Tanner Atkinson.

“I liked how we were able to manufacture runs in different ways in that second game,” Camanche coach Darryl Cochran said. “I was real pleased with our hitting; our pitching also came on and did a nice job.”

Mike Peters drove in Nic Roth for the Irish’s first run in Game 2; Roth led off the inning with a single. The Irish kept the scoreboard busy with another run in the third inning when Lucas Laufenberg brought in Jon Wiesner on an RBI single. Wiesner reached base on an error.

Camanche starting pitcher Levi Carber then retired the next three batters in the third and fourth innings before Peters and Tim Dickherber singled.

“I thought that I threw strikes pretty well,” Carber said. “The first two innings were a little rough because I couldn’t find the strike zone, but my defense really helped me out.”

The Irish scored three runs on three hits that included a Laufenberg double, a leadoff Drury single and an RBI single from Bly in the fifth inning.
