Kauppila picks up pair of hits in loss

BELOIT, Wis.— A pitchers duel was expected Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field, and that’s exactly what 526 fans in attendance got.

Following Saturday night’s 11-6 LumberKings win which saw a combined 25 hits pounded out, it was Beloit (2-2, 32-42) right-hander Kyle Finnegan who silenced Clinton (2-2, 32-40) for the third time this season in a Beloit 4-1 victory.

Carlos Misell (6-7) — who had beaten Beloit twice this season with seven-inning performances — allowed a run just two batters into the bottom of the first. Boog Powell led off the home half with a walk, stole second, and scored on Melvin Mercedes’ RBI single to center.

Meanwhile, Finnegan (6-4) was lights out early, retiring the first eight batters he faced. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Lonnie Kauppila and Zach Shank in the third resulted in Clinton’s only run, but the 2013 6th round draft pick settled back in, delivering his third quality start against the LumberKings.

Shank’s RBI double in the third tied the game at one, but Beloit regained the lead for good, scoring two runs in the bottom half. Powell - who entered with a league-high .451 OBP - singled over Justin Seager at first to open the inning and went to third on a Mercedes single and fielding error by Aaron Barbosa in center.

After Misell struck out Jaycob Brugman, the Snappers executed a double steal of second and home, resulting in the go-ahead run. An RBI single by B.A. Vollmuth then extended Beloit’s lead to two, 3-1.

Finnegan departed after six innings, having allowed just four hits in the process. He turned the game over to Tyler Vail who threw two shutout frames before Beloit closer Andres Avila picked up his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.

The LumberKings totaled just five hits, led by Kauppila who collected two hitting ninth in the order.
