Boaters set up camp along docks

CLINTON — Floodwaters put a damper on most Fourth of July Mississippi River plans, but the dedicated slip renters at the Clinton Marina didn’t let that defeat their holiday spirit.

As the river crested Thursday evening at 20.9 feet at Camanche, nearly 4 feet above flood stage, water began spilling into the parking lot at the Clinton Marina, causing some rerouting issues for manager Cindy Brackemeyer.

But despite some anxiety for boater and visitor safety, she said the marina was still an active area for the holiday.

“My nerves were on high alert dealing with the parking lot and the docks, just making sure everyone was staying safe,” she recalled. “But I think everybody listened to the advice from the (Iowa Department of Natural Resources) and the Coast Guard and stayed off the water.”

Though most boaters heeded the warnings of a dangerous river, some still ventured out on the water, mostly for short cruises in the open channel in front of the marina.

Others hosted Fourth of July parties on their slipped boats along the marina’s docks, still benefiting from the river’s appealing qualities from the safety of the shoreline.

“We’re really comparable to a floating campground because the docks rise with the water,” she said. “So the slip renters were still down here enjoying everything on the riverfront.”

Another area where she saw a lot of activity was the actual campground just on the other side of the Riverview Drive flood levee.

By Thursday, she said, every site at the Riverview RV Park was filled, with only a few of the campers packing up and leaving by Sunday.

That additional activity helped balance out the loss of revenue over the weekend for the marina, which was forced to shut down the gasoline dock on Tuesday because of the high water.
