Credit union to expand

CLINTON — A Clinton credit union has announced plans for expansion at its North Second Street location.

First Gateway Credit Union’s 1,800-square-foot facility will be expanded to 4,500 square feet to accommodate a meeting room, a private sit down waiting area, new ATM location and four additional offices.

The main entrance also will be relocated from the eastern side of the building to what will become the north end of the new addition.

“The kickoff of this expansion and remodel project is exciting because it is something we envisioned for many years,” 1st Gateway Credit Union CEO Pat Drennen said.

Construction on the project began Wednesday with the removal of bricks on the north side of the building where the addition will be located.

First Gateway COO Angela Drury said the company has been planning the expansion for a few years but were waiting for the right time to begin construction.

“It was in our plans to expand that office at some point, if the growth continued,” Drury said. “A few years ago we bought the lot to the north in anticipation for needing that extra room.”

In 2008, 1st Gateway expanded its main branch office in Camanche and has already outgrown that office space. The company feels now is the best time to expand its Second Street location.

To help support the local economy, 1st Gateway hired Clinton Engineering to lead the construction efforts.

“We are trying to use as many local contractors as we can,” Drury said. “A lot of our members are employed by the companies around here, so we like to take that into consideration.”

First Gateway Credit Union currently serves more than 8,750 members living or working in Clinton, Jackson, Dubuque, Jones, Cedar and Scott counties in Iowa and Whiteside, Carroll, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Ogle, Lee, Bureau, Henry and Rock Island counties in Illinois.

The company currently has offices located in Camanche, Clinton, Fulton, Ill., and DeWitt and assets in excess of $87.5 million.

Construction on the North Second Street location is projected to be completed by the first quarter of 2014.
