Meet Your Neighbor — Hunter & Brycen

CLINTON — Two area children have given a gift of caring to an area shelter this holiday season.

Sharlie Lawrence was watching the news a couple of weeks ago and when she learned that area food shelters are having a difficult year. Sitting down with sons, Hunter, 7, and Brycen, 6, she asked if they wanted to help people who needed food.

“Our grandma and mom told us that if we collect food for the poor people, then we can get food for the poor people so they can have Thanksgiving,” Hunter said.

At first the boys did not understand how some people might not have the food shelter and other things they have. Sharlie said she answered their questions and it was a real learning experience for them. After that, they were all for helping out.

The family started calling friends and family, asking for food or money to help the Victory Center. They posted on Facebook and texted.

“We actually collected way more than we expected,” Sharlie said.

One Clinton resident — a complete stranger — saw the post on Facebook and called Sharlie to meet with her with a car trunk full of food. The boys receive $50 and $75 worth of food from single individuals.

“We had some awesome people who donated,” Sharlie said.

In one week’s time, the boys had seven large boxes of food, including one that they filled themselves. They had a great deal of fun filling that box with stuffing, potatoes, ketchup, chicken noodle soup and Kool-aid.

“There were a lot of cans,” Brycen said.

The family brought the boxes to the Victory Center on Monday, to be used at its Great Thanksgiving Banquet this Wednesday. Executive Director Pastor Ray Giminez was so thankful and proud of the boys for their donation, emphasizing the importance of instilling this sense of compassion and generosity in children.
