Hy-Vee raising funds for research

CLINTON — The Clinton Hy-Vee is inviting people to sample wine and beer this Friday to raise funds to benefit juvenile diabetes research.

The Sixth Annual Beer and Wine Show will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Oakwood Grand Ballroom at the Wild Rose Casino & Resort, 777 Wild Rose Drive. The event will feature door prizes, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and a chocolate fountain. Proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and to sponsor riders during the Ride to Cure Diabetes.

Clinton Hy-Vee JDRF Event Coordinator Curtis Farley said juvenile diabetes is a disease the company has been concerned with for more than 90 years. According to the Hy-Vee website, the disease struck the Hy-Vee family in 1921, when company cofounder Charles Hyde’s oldest son, Paul, died from the disease at age 8.

“As the needs of diabetic children grew, Hy-Vee dedicated its efforts to help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation find a cure for the debilitating disease,” the website states.

Farley said in a letter that the JDRF is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure Type 1 diabetes. He added that Hy-Vee is proud to partner in their research for a cure. The company has raised almost $10 million through various corporate store events since 1998.

“The impact that Hy-vee has had on important researches is probably immeasurable,” JDRF Executive Director AnnElise Walsh said.

Walsh said the JDRF funds research globally to try to find treatments and cures for Type 1 diabetes. Currently, a project is being funded that would create an artificial pancreas. This would help people with Type 1 diabetes better maintain blood sugar levels within a target range with minimal effort.

“It’s a full-time job to keep your health in check when you have Type 1 diabetes,” Walsh said. More about the artificial pancreas project is available at http://www.artificialpancreasproject.com.
