Head out on the highway

CLINTON — Around 400 Harley riders will cruise into Clinton this weekend as the city hosts the Harley Owners Group 2013 state rally.

From Thursday through Saturday, Clinton will be filled with bikers from across the state who will take part in various events throughout the city.

“We just want the city to welcome everybody to town and show them this is a friendly town they want to come back to,” said Dee Ketelsen, this year’s site coordinator.

Harleys will start to roll in Thursday afternoon. The opening ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Clinton Harley-Davidson, 2519 Lincoln Way.

While many of the three-day event’s activities, such as poker runs and guided rides, are meant for the Harley riders, members of the community can take part in a number of the festivities.

The public is invited to attend the street dance on Main Avenue from noon to 10 p.m. Friday. Silver Dollar, Just Friends and Main Avenue Pub will host the event, which will feature music, food and drink throughout the day.

“We hope to see a lot of people at Main Avenue on Friday,” Clinton Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Carrie Donaire said. “This rally is their annual event, but we as the public, should feel free to welcome them and help them celebrate.”

Gateway-area residents also are invited to attend the bike show from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Stout’s Irish Pub, 2352 Valley West Court.

At 6 p.m. Saturday the public is invited to watch as the hundreds of Harleys take part in a parade through town.

Bikers will start at the National Guard Armory, moving east on 13th Avenue North to Fourth Street. From Fourth Street, they will make their way to Fifth Avenue South to North Bluff Boulevard. They will follow Bluff Boulevard/ Manufacturing Drive to South 21st Street. The parade will end at Legend’s Sports Bar and Grill, 2118 Harrison Drive.

The parade participants will be escorted by Clinton police and should not cause any prolonged disruptions to traffic, Ketelsen said.

The parade will round off the three-day event, with the closing ceremony taking place from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Legend’s.
