Man charged after knife incident

CLINTON — A bar fight on Saturday escalated with one man returning with a knife.

Ricardo Hernandez, 48, 441 Sixth Ave. South, apartment five, is charged with going armed with intent, carrying weapons and public intoxication.

Clinton police responded at 10:25 p.m. to Apollo’s Tavern, 237 Fifth Ave. South, for a report of a Hispanic male who was in a bar fight, leaving the bar. According to court documents, the victim told officers the man attacked him and he pushed his attacker — later identified as Hernandez — into the jukebox. The victim said Hernandez suffered a laceration to his head and was bleeding.

According to the affidavit, officers did not locate the individual, but responded to the rear of the bar a few minutes later for a report that he had returned. When officers arrived, they were told Hernandez had just left on a bicycle.

Officer Anthony Stone spoke with a man who said he was smoking outside the back of Apollo’s when Hernandez came back and held a large knife toward him in a threatening manner, according to court documents. The individual continued that Hernandez chased him back into the bar, causing him to hold the back door closed to keep Hernandez out.

Officer Shane Haskell waited behind Apollo’s in an unmarked police and radioed that Hernandez had returned at 11:10 p.m., according to the affidavit. Stone arrived and held his Taser on Hernandez while Haskell handcuffed him. Haskell took a knife, with a 6-inch blade, from him, according to court documents.

Haskell and Officer Roger Schumacher allegedly heard Hernandez say he was glad they took him to jail so he would not get into more trouble, according to the affidavit. He told officers that three men jumped him inside the tavern and he went home and got a knife to take care of it.
