Bandits bang out 11 runs on LumberKings

CLINTON — At least the kids who showed up for the Clinton LumberKings game on Tuesday afternoon had a good time.

The home team on the field didn’t after dropping the matinee to Quad Cities 11-2.

Eddie Campbell got the ball for the LumberKings, but he lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs, and Clinton manager Scott Steinmann agreed that Campbell had a bad day.

“He struggled a little bit today,” Steinmann said. “All those walks early he had in his past outings caught up to him. The ball was carrying a little bit more, but they took advantage of that, and we didn’t.”

The wind at first pitch was blowing out to right field at 18 miles an hour and never really lightened up. That led to some balls flying out of Ashford University Field.

Quad Cities hit two home runs off Campbell, and Moline, Ill., native Thomas Lindauer homered in the third and fourth innings to help break the game open. Both homers from Lindauer were two-run shots.

Chase McDonald hit an RBI double in the third inning to cap the River Bandits’ three-run rally. Tanner Mathis scored on the McDonald double.

Then, in the top of the fourth, Brett Phillips led off with a triple that found the wall in center field. Alex Gonzales wasted no time bringing in Phillips on a double.

Jobduan Morales reached on a Justin Seager error, setting up Lindauer’s second long ball of the afternoon.

Clinton reliever Tommy Burns came in in relief in the fourth, and despite having a slow start this season, Burns threw 3 2/3 of no-hit ball.

“I’ve really been impressed with how he’s bounced back after his slow start,” Steinmann said. “He’s really taken off now, and hopefully he can keep that up.”
