DES MOINES — Aleenah Marcucci put herself in position to become a favorite to win the Class 2A track and field title in the 100-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish in the event Friday at the Drake Relays.
Marcucci turned in a 2A-leading time of 15.20 seconds in the finals, which were won by Urbandale’s Mary Young in a meet-record time of 14.30. Marcucci finished one spot above Garner-Hayfield/Ventura’s Emily Mathews (15.36), who had edged Marcucci 15.353-15.360 in the preliminaries for the best 2A time in the state to that point.
Marcucci had one of three top-10 performances for area athletes Friday at one of the nation’s premier track events.
Clinton thrower Nathan Harden earned a top-10 finish in the shot put. His best throw, 51 feet, 3.75 inches, was good for eighth place. Dalton Ferguson of Solon win with a toss of 55-4.5.
Clinton also got a top-10 finish in the 800-meter relay. Freshman Quavon Jones led off the race, followed by senior Eric Maddasion, sophomore Marquis Robinson and senior Deshond Robinson.The Kings’ time of 1:30.64 was good for 10th place. Waukee led the event in 1:27.81.
In other events involving area high school athletes:
• The Clinton foursome of Delante Chamberlain, Maddasion, Marquis Robinson and Deshond Robinson just missed making the finals in the 1,600 relay. Their time, 3:25.05, which was good for 11th place, was .35 off a top-eight finish needed to advance. Albia had the best qualifying time: 3:19.59.
• Central DeWitt’s Sarah Schoel also just missed a top-10 finish in the long jump. She placed 11th with her best jump covering 16-5.75. Jalynn Roberts-Lewis of Des Moines Roosevelt had the best jump, 19-0.
• Northeast, Clinton and Maquoketa all competed in the girls 400 relay. Northeast turned in the top performance. Rylee Dickey, Peyton Gray, Marcucci and Tierra Hildebrandt placed 45th in 51.662. Clinton’s foursome of Raven Jones, Elle Tubbs, Hannah Burken and Erin Wenzel finished 60th in 52.16. Maquoketa took 67th in 52.48, with Hannah Gruenwald, Hailey Schwenker, Jenna Holtz and Aubree Taylor running the event. Davenport Assumption had the best qualifying time: 48.55.
