Rotary auction slated

CLINTON — With one playground project nearing completion, the Clinton Rotary Club plans to turn its attention to a Lyons-area playground.

Clinton Parks Superintendent Tom Krogman has worked with the club for several years to improve Clinton play areas. He said the community’s playgrounds would not be in the shape they are now if not for the Rotary Club.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements to the parks and playground systems thanks to them,” Krogman said. “It’s great working with them. It’s a great group.”

Clinton Rotary Club President Tom Determann said the group saw a need for work on area parks. During the past five years, the club has completed work on Rotary Park along Riverfront Drive and started a project at Emma Young Park, near the Ericksen Community Center, 1401 11th Ave. North. Last year, Krogman and Rotary began working on adding a playground area to the park.

Now the project is nearing completion.

The Emma Young Park playground includes small swings, chairs that spin and a climber. However, the area is currently surrounded by a fence until the safety surface can be installed. Krogman, who attributes the delay to the cold and wet weather, hopes the playground will be open within a few weeks.

With the Emma Young Park project almost done, Rotary and Krogman will turn their attention to Rainbow Playground, located on Garfield Street, north of Main Avenue. Krogman said the existing equipment is old and obsolete, with the swings having been with the city approximately 34 years. He added that this area needs a good playground.

“With the softball games up there, during the games especially it gets a lot of use,” Krogman said.

Krogman plans to replace the swings, remove the existing climber and put in a modular unit, much like the one at the Ericksen Community Center. The project’s scope depends on how much money is available.
