Robinson playing underdog (with Video)

DUBUQUE — Sure, Deshond Robinson made it to state in multiple events Thursday night, but there’s one race that the Clinton senior will have his mind on all week prepping for Des Moines.

In the 400- meter dash on a rainy regional meet Thursday in Dubuque, Jase Grant of Dubuque Senior edged out Robinson by one-hundredth of a second. Robinson turned in a time of 48.91 seconds.

Each runner qualified for state, but Robinson has motivation to work with leading up to the race.

“He’s first in the state, and right now I’m sitting second,” he said. “It’ll be some good competition next week, and I’m looking forward to it.”

He’s right — Grant has the state’s best time (48.76) this season while Robinson is again one-hundredth behind.

Robinson, however, won the 200 in 22.2 seconds, timed by hand.

Clinton’s 1,600 relay team that had Robinson on the anchor is also going to Des Moines, but the 3-plus minutes was all work to get the job done.

“I noticed I got out a little too quick, so I had to slow down,” Robinson recalled. “I just saw those two guys in front of me, and I knew I had to catch them down.”

When Quavon Jones handed off to Robinson, Clinton’s top sprinter went around the opening turn in fourth place, but like he said, he caught up to those two guys.

“I think as a team we did pretty good,” Robinson said of both the 1,600 and 400 relays.

Meanwhile, Nate Harden likes to swim in the winter, and as a celebration, he “swam” down a big hill after his victory in the discus and the shot put.

Harden won with a throw of 145-feet, 3.5, which was more than two inches farther than the competition. This will be Harden’s second state-level competition as the senior made it as a swimmer in March.
