L'Kings, Snappers trade shutouts

CLINTON -- Clinton finally found some offense and salvaged the final game of a four-game series against Beloit with a 5-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Midwest League baseball at Ashford University Field.

Shut out in two of the first three games -- they scored twice in the other one -- the LumberKings recorded their third shutout of the season to snap Beloit’s six-game winning streak. Clinton (22-19) went 6-4 on the homestand and remainsed in third place in the Western Division.

Clinton had just 12 hits combined in the first three games, including a 6-0 loss Saturday.

Early, it appeared the Snappers might have Clinton’s number again. Starter Bobby Wahl (0-3) retired the first 11 batters he faced before Jack Reinheimer hit a two-out single in the fourth inning. Wahl’s bid for a shutout ended one batter later. He surrendered a towering home run to Austin Wilson that made it 2-0. Wahl left the game after the Wilson home run on the hook for the loss.

Clinton struck for two more in the sixth inning off of right-handed reliever Junior Mendez.

After one-out singles by Corey Simpson and Reinheimer, Clinton executed a double steal that saw Reinheimer take second and Simpson score from third on the throw from catcher Jose Chavez. After Mendez retired Wilson, Justin Seager singled to Snappers third baseman B.A. Vollmuth, as Reinheimer scored from third to make it 4-0.

Meanwhile, Clinton starter Carlos Misell (5-2) kept Beloit’s bats silence. He remained in the game through the seventh inning, as he matched Lars Huijer’s seven-shutout-inning performance in the opener of the homestand in the finale. Misell struck out five and walked only one as he picked up his team-high fifth win.

Thyago Vieira pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Clinton added one more run in the bottom of the frame on three singles. Seager drove home Reinheimer to cap the scoring. Vieira put the first two men on in the ninth but got the next three in order to close the game.
