Meet Your Neighbor: Scott Fluegel

CLINTON — Growing up in California, Scott Fluegel always knew he wanted to help people through the ministry.

“I felt called to it (ministry) since I was in high school,” Scott said.

Now the retired U.S. Army Chaplain will be helping those in need as a licensed mental health counselor at Cornerstone Wellness Clinic.

Scott joined the military after confiding his pull toward ministry work to a neighbor. She advised him to join the military and see what God did with that. He said God kept him in the military.

For more than 20 years, Scott served as a chaplain, moving to DeWitt with his wife and three daughters four years ago. Besides serving in the Army as a family life chaplain, he also acted as on on-call chaplain at Mercy Medical Center.

“When I came here the first time, I knew I wanted to be here at Cornerstone Wellness,” Scott said.

His experience as a family life chaplain and his master’s of sciences degree in counseling qualified him to work as a mental health counselor. Scott officially started at Cornerstone Wellness Clinic last month as a nationally certified counselor, but has not seen any clients yet. He said he feels prepared for this work, due to his previous pastoral counseling experience.

“I’ve always wanted to be a family life chaplain,” Scott said. “It really, in some ways, is not a transition for me.”

He is ready to begin working with clients “as soon as they come in the front door.”

In his spare time, Scott also practices tae-kwon-do. He is currently a low blue belt.
