Finally Friday event draws crowd (with VIDEO)

CLINTON — From the first strum of the guitar, Finally Friday on the River organizers knew their first event of the year was a success.

Featuring the Chris Avey Band and Wild Oatz, Friday’s first concert of a series of four summer music events brought out a large crowd that challenged a record set last year of nearly 1,000 people.

”It’s unbelievable,” said Finally Friday talent scout Mike Pickney about the reception of Friday’s kick-off event. “People are responding very well today.”

With weather as nice as Friday’s, 80 degrees and sunny, it was no wonder the crowd was thick, said Finally Friday committee member Lori Susie.

She expected as the night wrapped up that the group would have seen the biggest turnout in its six years of hosting the event.

”This promises to be a record-setting night,” she said.

But what potentially was the largest showing the Finally Fridays organization has ever seen almost wasn’t.

Only six hours before the evening commenced, the final stretch of electrical work was being done to the newly renovated Riverview Park Bandshell, cutting it a little close for the city of Clinton and the organizers of Finally Friday at the River.

Susie attributed the completion of that tight deadline to the commitment and cooperation with the city and her group.

“I really feel like the city was working as a team to make sure this bandshell would be ready for us,” she said. “And, we’re so grateful for that.”

And as the summer continues and the concert series gains even more steam, the Finally Friday committee expects the new bandshell will be fully embraced, making it money well spent.
